Who are you?

I want to talk about beliefs for just a moment. And no, I'm not talking about believing in God here. I'm talking about what you believe about yourself and who you are.

I hear people all the time speaking in absolutes, especially when it comes to their own inadequacies. "I can't learn French" or "I'm not good at math" or "I'm a bad leader" or "I don't have what it takes." And even though most of us would agree that these statements are categorically "untrue," (you're not always these things) we still believe them as if they were true. And then we act accordingly.

One thought like this I've had recently is that "I'm not good at execution." And while that was just a thought, I chose to believe it. And because I believed it, I've lived into it. Because I believe I'm not good at executing, I avoid taking action and honoring the commitments I make to myself (such as writing this newsletter 😜). Then, that self-sabotage leads to stagnation, which reinforces my original belief ("See!? I told you I was ______"). And before I know it, my inadequacy becomes my identity

I've gone from "I'm not good at execution" to "I am an undisciplined and unreliable person."

Ultimately, our thoughts, if not taken captive (2 Cor 10:5), will eventually solidify into beliefs. Those beliefs lead us to take actions. Those actions harden our beliefs even further and form our identity. A false identity.

My invitation for you is to lay aside the self-fulfilling, false identities that are holding you back and replace them with something that's more true.

A Few Questions to Leave You With…

  1. What is an negative, absolute statement you've made about yourself lately? (i.e. "I can't..." "I don't..." "I'm bad...")

  2. Is it true? (hint: the answer is no!)

  3. What is the underlying belief?

  4. What is the false identity you've been living from? Submit that to the Lord and ask Him to show you what He says about you so you can replace the false for the true.

Go out and lead meaningfully friends.

PS - If you found this valuable in any way, I have two requests. One, would you reply and let me know? I’d love to hear from you. Second, would you consider forwarding this to a friend or colleague who might also be eager to grow as a leader? I would be honored to be trusted with your people and promise to serve them as powerfully as I intend on serving you.
