Have you ever heard of the term "organoid intelligence" before? Before you click away -- hear me out...
If you haven't, its cutting edge science (nerds: click here 😉) where researchers at Johns Hopkins have essentially created an organic computer that's made of human brain cells. With the limited natural resources for silicon-based computing systems, scientists have been searching for ways to increase our computing and processing power while decreasing the resources required to power them.
In other words, in the not-so-distant future, we might be "growing" our computers from human brain cells instead of building them in factories. This is not science fiction y'all. Its already happening.
Why does this matter to you as a leader? Whether we are paying attention or not, our world is RAPIDLY changing. The AI explosion, the ubiquity of connected devices and data collection, the advancements of biotech and robotics -- the world we will be living in even 5 short years from now will be dramatically different than the world we find ourselves in today. More than ever before, the world needs principled, grounded, emotionally intelligent, meaningful leaders.
More than ever before, the world needs principled, grounded, emotionally intelligent, meaningful leaders.
If there is one thing the tech bros in Silicon Valley don't have (typically) is a sense of morality and ethics. The world will continue to advance, and if leaders (especially if you are a church leader) are not only engaged in the conversation, but in many ways looking to lead the conversation, then we are consigning ourselves to whatever comes. I believe that we are uniquely positioned to help the world navigate the eminent changes we are stepping into.
Which brings me to the question I want to pose to you today.
Are you looking at your feet or looking at the horizon?
Where is your focus? Are you purely looking down, focused on just getting to Friday? Are you only focused on your company? Your department? Your role? Your team? Your task list? You?
Or, is your head up, looking at what's around you and seeking to discern the future we are headed towards? Are we putting ourselves in the position and mindset of the people we lead and what challenges they are facing? Do we have a desired future state in mind that is informing the work we are doing in the present? Ultimately, are we paying attention to what's going on around us so we can speak intelligently and with believability about the very real problems the world is facing?
My invitation to you: let's pick our heads up, friends.
Trevor
PS - If you found this valuable in any way, I have two requests. One, would you reply and let me know? I’d love to hear from you. Second, would you consider forwarding this to a friend or colleague who might also be eager to grow as a leader? I would be honored to be trusted with your people and promise to serve them as powerfully as I intend on serving you.
